Yeah. [laughs] Youve gotta print my response. Not at all. AD: I stay away from commercials. When someones fingers get calluses on them, the guitar doesnt hurt so bad. He hugged me, I hugged him, and he said a few things in my earthat are mine, Im not gonna mention em. . Zappa let me do whatever I wanted to with it, so I played like a frustrated drummer. His solos are always very musical and he always has something new to say. We went back, and we started writing Raised on Radio. I was always a songwriting sort of guy. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. And then the day after, I was at the airport, and youd think we had a hit single again. Because then I started to become a medical guy. In the beginning, it felt extremely freeing. When you see a Journey song turn up on a movie soundtrack, or on TV? Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. And I felt that we still had wings, yknow? I didnt need any of the other affirmations. And George Tickner in the beginning, who was the guitar player in the band before he left, and in came myself and Jon Cain. And Jon Cain and I used to spend hours together, doing lyrics. There are other people playing with you and there's a courtesy involved - you can't be trekking on each other's toes. So I felt, seeing as I'm doing that, I might as well be running my own band and making some cash, because we were on a paid wage routine with him. But I appreciated the musicality, the ability to jam. I dont know. AD: Dixieland, or sometimes more of a swing-type sound. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. The name wasnt settled yet. I was riding my Harley a lot, all throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Otherwise we dont think that we can ever get anything on the radio. They wanted us to get on the radio. So youre not enjoined from discussing him in public? I use it to find out how I'm playing-where I rush or where I slow down. So everything was really out of date. If you watch the [Behind the Music] documentary on VH1its pretty much one-sided, with Perry, the way they edited that thing, but there was a couple funny things that went down in that interview. But I lwould always come off stage at the end of a set feeling totally and utterly exhausted, and; I was always getting sick on the road because I would be so run down from; pushing myself to the limit all of;the;;' time. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. So after Neal did his second solo album, I went to LA, and in about three weeks, I wrote Street Talk, which was a bit of a nod to the earlier band, and to the bass player whod passed, and with some great studio musicians and cowriters, we just knocked the record out and we released it. It wasnt easy to walk out, but I had to do it. [laughs] Please. But thats okay. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. And lo and behold, all of a sudden you started hearin Lights on the radio. I gotta get out for a while. And they said, Well, what do you mean? And I said, Thats exactly what I mean, is what Im saying. AD: Yes I did, at one point. AD: The guys in the Starship know how to lock in and play as a band. The more you play, the less they hear. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. We finally got Aynsley Dunbar. So you came back together, you made one more record, and then the band took a break. RM: What type of music was being played in Liverpool? They wanted me to play note for note behind them, and I wouldn't do it. How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? Maybe I should just speak for myself. What I thought I had to be? AD: I never had any problem. RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. They sort of got uptight with me because I was much younger than they were. We all put our lives and sweat and blood and tears into this thing. So I came home, and started seeing a series of doctors, getting opinions. So I went to this club and we chatted about me coming over and joining his band, but 1 couldn't give an answer because l wasn't sure if I wanted to disband my group.
