The presence of black Africans, especially, led some Italians to construct racial hierarchies in which Italians and other Europeans stood at the top, Arabs and North Africans somewhere in the middle, and black Africans at the bottom in terms of rights and privileges. Thus Italys racialist views of its colonial subjects differed in some respects from that of other colonial powers. Modern Italy. [51] A German intervention prevented the fall of Libya and the combined Axis attacks drove the British back into Egypt until summer 1942, before being stopped at El Alamein. During World War II, Italy allied with Germany in 1940 and occupied British Somaliland, western Egypt, much of Yugoslavia, Tunisia, parts of south-western France and most of Greece; however, it then lost those conquests and its African colonies to the invading allied forces by 1943. Allying racism with nationalism and national identity, the Fascist Party motivated Italians to also think of ethnicity, rather than religion or culture, as what separated them from others, thus leading to increasing anti-Semitism in Italy.
